How funding works

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides support to people with a disability with funding that is tailored to individual needs. The aim of the NDIS is to support people with a permanent and significant disability that impacts their ability to take part in everyday activities.

The NDIS gives people with disability more choice and control over how, when and where their supports are provided, and gives certainty in receiving the support they need over their lifetime.

Access to the NDIS

The NDIS has an eligibility check list (NDIS eligibility checklist) that will assist with determining who can access the scheme. The next step is to then complete an access request form (NDIS access form) and submit to the NDIA along with evidence of disability and how daily life is impacted. The NDIA will then make a decision within in 21 days.

The access process can be confusing and overwhelming but we are here to help! We have experienced staff who can assist with each step of the process.

NDIS Funding

NDIS funding can be approved across three types of support budgets, being core supports, capacity building supports and capital supports.

CORE

Core supports is for assistance with day-to-day tasks that relate to NDIS goals. Core supports can be used for a support worker, cleaning, gardening, social activities or respite. Core supports is made up of four budget support categories including Consumables, Assistance with Daily Life, Assistance with Social, Economic and Community participation and Transport. Core supports, in most cases, is flexible and can be used across the four support budget categories. This means funding can be used interchangeably between the four support budget categories.

CAPACITY BUILDING

Capacity Building supports is for assistance with building skills and learning new strategies that relate to NDIS goals. Capacity Building supports can be used for therapists, employment, behaviour intervention and assistance with managing tenancy obligations. Capacity Building supports is made up of nine budget support categories including Support Coordination, Improved Life Choices, Improved Daily Living, Improved Health and Wellbeing, Improved Relationships, Improved Learning, Finding and Keeping a Job, Increased Social and Community Participation and Improved Living Arrangements. Capacity Building supports are not yet flexible across the nine support budget categories but the NDIA is working on this becoming a possibility in the future!

CAPITAL

Capital supports is for assistance with purchasing equipment and modifying equipment that will assist with the reducing the impact of disabilities. Capital supports is made up of two budget support categories including Assistive Technology and Home Modifications. Capacity Building supports are not flexible and will usually cover specific items that the NDIA have already approved.
